Cellesim gives you mobile data on local partner networks in the country you visit, at a fraction of traditional roaming prices. This page explains plainly what happens when you use a Cellesim eSIM, including the parts most providers don't mention.
You connect to real local networks
When you arrive, your eSIM attaches to one of the local mobile operators listed on the plan page (for example AT&T or Telcel in Mexico). Coverage, signal and speed are those of that local network.
- Many plans can use more than one local network; your phone picks the one with the best signal, just like with roaming.
- Some destinations have only one partner network. The plan page shows which networks a plan uses.
- Where the local network and your phone support it, you get 5G or 4G LTE; otherwise the connection falls back to the best available technology.
Where your internet traffic exits
Technically, a travel eSIM works as roaming on the local network. That means your data usually does not exit inside the country you are visiting. Depending on the plan, it leaves the internet through the network of the operator that issued the eSIM profile, or through our provider's gateway, which can be in another country or on another continent (for example in Europe or Asia).
What this means for you:
- Websites and speed tests may show an IP address and location from another country.
- Ping can be somewhat higher than on a local SIM card. For browsing, maps, messaging, social media and video calls the difference is usually not noticeable.
- Changing APN settings does not change where traffic exits.
If you need an IP address in a specific country (for streaming, banking or region-locked services), use a VPN with a server in that country together with your eSIM. If local exit is important to you, ask our support before buying and we will tell you honestly whether any of our plans can offer it.
Transparent traffic management
We don't add our own speed caps or hidden traffic shaping. If a plan has a fair-usage limit, a daily high-speed allowance or a speed reduction after a certain amount of data, it is shown on the plan before you buy. Local operators can still manage traffic on their own networks, for example during heavy congestion.
Security and privacy
- Your connection runs on licensed mobile operators with standard mobile network encryption.
- We don't inspect the content of your traffic, inject ads or sell your browsing data.
- On public Wi-Fi or for sensitive work, a VPN adds an extra layer of protection.
Installation and activation
- Works on eSIM-enabled iPhone and Android devices.
- You install the eSIM with a QR code or an activation code; no physical SIM is needed.
- You can install it before you travel. On most plans the validity period starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in the destination.
- Usually no APN or manual settings are needed. If a plan requires them, the installation instructions say so.
Good to know before you buy
- Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not carrier-locked.
- Look at the plan page for the local networks used.
- If you need a local IP address, plan to use a VPN.
