We analysed 719 travel eSIM purchases made between March and June 2026 to see how much mobile data travelers really need. The headline: most people buy far less than they think.
What travelers buy: plan sizes
Nearly two-thirds of travelers (63%) buy a plan of 5 GB or less. Only 11% buy more than 10 GB, and just 12% opt for unlimited.
Top destinations of 2026
Turkey leads by a wide margin, followed by France and Germany — a mix of inbound tourism hubs and diaspora travel corridors.
The takeaway for travelers
If the typical traveler is happy with 3 GB for a multi-week trip, most people are overpaying for data they never use — whether through oversized plans or carrier roaming. Estimate ~1 GB per day for balanced use and buy accordingly.
