5 GB over seven days gives you about 714 MB per day. It can cover a trip with modest mobile use, but it is not a guarantee: video, photo backups and a laptop hotspot can change the result considerably. Start with your own phone's usage history rather than an assumed average for every traveller.
Calculate your seven-day allowance
For these planning examples, 1 GB means 1,000 MB. The formula is daily mobile use × trip days + extra allowance. The 20% margin below is a planning choice, not a measurement of typical consumption.

These figures are hypothetical daily totals. They do not promise that maps, social media or a video call will use a fixed amount. If you want a 20% margin inside a 5 GB allowance, plan for roughly 595 MB of ordinary use per day: 5,000 ÷ 1.2 ÷ 7.
Check what your phone actually uses
- Look at the mobile-data counter and the dates it covers. A billing month is not automatically the same period as your trip.
- Check which apps consume most data. Include background photo uploads and any devices connected through a hotspot.
- Compare a day that resembles your travel plans. A day on home Wi-Fi is a poor estimate for a full day away.
- Check your remaining package allowance during the trip. Phone counters and provider counters can differ or update at different times.

Make the allowance last
Download supported offline maps and entertainment over Wi-Fi before leaving. Review cloud backups, app updates and video quality settings. If you share the connection with another device, check that your exact package permits hotspot use and include that device's traffic in the same budget.
Choose the package after the calculation
A seven-day itinerary needs both enough data and validity that covers the trip. Check every destination, your device's eSIM compatibility, the package's activation trigger and any speed or sharing conditions. A 30-day package duration does not change a 5 GB data allowance.
