Does the iPhone 16 have eSIM?
The iPhone 16 supports eSIM, but there are exceptions depending on where it was bought.
On supported versions two eSIMs can be active at the same time. Versions with a SIM tray can also run one nano-SIM and one eSIM together. That is two active lines, not three.

How to check eSIM support on your iPhone 16
Check the following settings. Menu names can vary with software version and phone language.
Settings → General → About: check the model number, EID and Carrier Lock.
An EID or an Add eSIM menu helps identify eSIM capability. If either is missing, check the exact model and current software with the manufacturer; absence alone is not a conclusive diagnosis.
How to install an eSIM on the iPhone 16
Use the installation method supplied with your order. Direct installation, a QR code or manual details may be available depending on the device and package. An internet connection is needed for setup.
For a supported device, begin with this menu and follow your order instructions:
Settings → Cellular / Mobile Data → Add eSIM (older software may say Add Cellular Plan).
If your iPhone 16 version has no eSIM
- If your model number belongs to a version without eSIM, a travel eSIM cannot be installed on that phone, so do not buy a QR code for it. The options are a local physical SIM at your destination, or a travel eSIM on a second compatible device used as a mobile hotspot.
- If the phone has eSIM but the menu refuses the profile, the cause is often a carrier lock. Ask the carrier that sold the phone to unlock it before you travel.
- If Carrier Lock shows a restriction, ask the original carrier about unlocking before buying a travel profile.
- Choose the intended mobile-data line and follow the purchased plan’s roaming instructions. Successful profile installation alone does not confirm usable data.
iPhone 16 and eSIM: frequently asked questions
Which SIM combinations can I use on the iPhone 16?
On supported versions two eSIMs can be active at the same time. Versions with a SIM tray can also run one nano-SIM and one eSIM together. That is two active lines, not three.
Does every iPhone 16 sold worldwide have eSIM?
Versions sold in the United States have no physical SIM tray and work with eSIM only. According to Apple, versions of this model sold in mainland China do not support eSIM. Versions sold in Hong Kong and Macao use two nano-SIM cards for dual SIM. Apple does not list them among the Hong Kong and Macao models with eSIM.
Should I install the eSIM before I fly?
Read the order instructions before installing. Adding a profile and starting the package validity are different checks; the purchased plan determines the start condition.
Will my phone number change when I install an eSIM?
Adding a travel profile does not transfer your existing number to that profile. Calls and SMS on your home number still depend on your home carrier. A data connection does not guarantee bank SMS delivery.
Can I move the eSIM to another phone?
Transfer and reinstallation depend on the provider, device and purchased package. Do not assume a QR code can be reused. Ask support before deleting or moving an installed profile.
