Yes, WhatsApp, FaceTime, and other video/voice calling apps work perfectly fine and without any restrictions when you are traveling in Italy.
Italy has no government restrictions or throttling on popular VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services. This means you can use your favorite apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, Skype, Zoom, and Google Meet to make calls, send voice messages, and engage in video chats with family and friends just as you would at home.
Your eSIM provides the necessary mobile data connection to power these applications reliably. Once activated, your device will automatically connect to the strongest available major network in Italy, ensuring you have consistent internet access for all your communication needs. The exact network provider may vary depending on your specific eSIM plan, but all major networks support these services.
Yes, ride-hailing apps like Uber and Bolt work in Italy with your eSIM, as they rely on a stable mobile data connection provided by your plan.
These apps function just like they would at home, using your eSIM's data to connect to drivers and navigate. While Uber and Bolt operate in Italy, their services are generally more limited compared to other countries, primarily available in major cities such as Rome, Milan, and Florence, often focusing on professional car services (e.g., Uber Black). For wider availability, particularly for licensed taxis, many travelers and locals use apps like Free Now, which is very popular across numerous Italian cities.
Your eSIM ensures you have the necessary data connection to access these services reliably throughout Italy, connecting to the strongest available major network. The exact network provider your eSIM utilizes may vary depending on your specific plan.

Our eSIMs for Italy typically connect to major local networks such as TIM, Iliad, and Wind, ensuring wide coverage across the country.
Upon activation, your eSIM will automatically connect to the strongest available major network in your current location. This intelligent selection guarantees reliable service, whether you're navigating the historic streets of Rome, enjoying the fashion and culture of Milan, or exploring the picturesque landscapes of Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast. While our eSIMs prioritize connecting to the best available network, the exact primary network provider can sometimes vary based on the specific eSIM plan you select, as different plans may have partnerships with particular local carriers.
Italy boasts a robust mobile infrastructure, with TIM, Iliad, and Wind being the leading providers. These networks offer extensive 4G LTE coverage across most regions, and 5G services are rapidly expanding in urban centers and popular tourist destinations, ensuring fast data speeds for your travels.
For EU plans, yes, 'Roam Like At Home' applies in Italy; however, UK plans often incur charges post-Brexit, and US plans almost always have high international roaming fees.
If you are traveling from an EU country, your mobile plan's allowances typically extend to Italy without extra cost, but always check your provider's fair usage policy for extended stays. For UK travelers, many major providers have reintroduced daily or per-MB roaming charges for EU countries like Italy since Brexit, so it's crucial to confirm with your specific network provider before your trip. US plans, such as those from AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon, generally charge significant daily fees or high per-unit rates for international roaming in Italy, unless you purchase an expensive international add-on.
An eSIM offers a cost-effective alternative to avoid unexpected roaming bills. Our eSIM automatically connects to the strongest available major network in Italy, which could be TIM, Iliad, or Wind, and the exact network can vary by plan.
While major cities in Italy have excellent mobile coverage, signal strength can be inconsistent or limited in many remote regions.
Areas like the mountainous Dolomites, parts of Sardinia, or other less populated national parks and valleys may experience varying signal strength due to natural topography and lower population density. Italy's main mobile networks – TIM, Iliad, and Wind – strive for extensive coverage, but even they face challenges in very isolated spots. Our eSIM automatically connects to the strongest available major network in Italy, which can include TIM, Iliad, or Wind, depending on the specific plan and your exact location.
For critical navigation or communication when exploring these areas, it's always a good practice to download offline maps and inform others of your itinerary. Be prepared for potential dead zones or weaker signals in the most isolated stretches.

About Italy eSIM
Italy eSIM: Travel Data Plans and Trip Guide
Compare Italy eSIM data plans for Rome, Florence, Venice and road trips. Check data, validity and separate coverage for onward European travel.
🏙️ Rome · Milan · Venice · Florence · Naples
Current plans start from $3.59. This is the total price of the lowest-priced available package, not a daily rate or the price of every data allowance.
Rome, Florence and Venice in one itinerary
Count all travel days when combining Rome, Florence and Venice, including arrival and departure. Save train bookings, accommodation details and maps before departure. For a Tuscany road trip, allow for navigation and sharing between devices if your package supports it. Downloading maps also helps when coverage drops; buying a larger data allowance does not guarantee a continuous signal.
Italy coverage does not mean free data across Europe
An Italy-labelled travel package does not automatically include France, Switzerland or every EU country. For onward travel, open the actual coverage list and compare a suitable regional plan. If your home subscription already includes EU/EEA roaming, check its available allowance and fair-use conditions first. A prepaid travel eSIM and a home-network roaming entitlement are different products.
How much data for 7 or 14 days?
Planning examples, not measured usage averages: multiply your own daily allowance by the number of travel days, then add a buffer. The examples below are calculations, not packages offered for sale.
| Assumed daily use | 7 days | 14 days |
|---|---|---|
| 0.5 GB/day | 3.5 GB | 7 GB |
| 1 GB/day | 7 GB | 14 GB |
Choose a package with enough data and validity for the full trip. A 7-day package will not cover a 14-day stay even if it has data left. Add laptop sharing, video calls and cloud backups separately; review hotspot rules and any fair-use speed limits.
Before departure and after landing
- Check the exact phone model and regional version for eSIM support and carrier unlocking.
- Read the selected package’s activation rule before installing over a stable internet connection. Installation and the start of validity may be different.
- On arrival, select the travel eSIM for mobile data and follow its roaming/APN instructions. Turn off data roaming and automatic data switching on the home line.
A travel data package does not automatically include a local phone number, voice calls or SMS. Keeping your home line active can still incur its own charges. Check these separately if you need banking texts or conventional calls.
